Moving Beyond Traditional Yacht Water Disinfection

May 19, 2026

For many years, chlorine, silver, and copper/silver ionization systems have been the default choice for potable water disinfection onboard yachts. However, across both commercial and private vessels, this is changing. An increasing number of yachts are moving towards HydrasilAg+, not simply as an alternative, but as a clear advancement in water treatment technology.

1. Proven Broad-Spectrum Disinfection

HydrasilAg+, currently the only PT5-certified silver stabilized hydrogen peroxide approved for drinking water intended for human consumption, provides powerful broad-spectrum disinfection against organisms including Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli, and controls Heterotrophic bacterial growth while also targeting biofilms.

Proven Global Efficacy – Hydrasil Ag+ is registered under :

EN1276, EN13697, EN1656, EN13727, EN14561, EN14349, EN16437, EN13623, AFNOR NF T 72-281, EN14348, AFNOR NF T 72-281, EN14204, EN1650, EN13697, EN1657, EN13624, EN14562, EN16438, AFNOR NF T 72-281, EN14476, AFNOR NF T 72-281, EN14675, EN13704, AFNOR NF T 72-281

Note: Heterotrophic bacteria are also known as HPC, Standard Plate Count, total plate count or colony count. Rather than only disinfecting free floating bacteria, HydrasilAg+ helps break down the environments in which microorganisms establish and proliferate, resulting in more effective and longer lasting system protection.

2. Residual Protection Throughout the Distribution System

Unlike chlorine, silver, and copper/silver ion systems, which can lose effectiveness rapidly under varying system conditions, HydrasilAg+ remains stable throughout the distribution network, providing long lasting residual protection, including at distal outlets rather than only near the dosing point.

This stability is particularly important in complex yacht distribution systems where stagnation, variable temperatures, and irregular usage patterns are common.

3. Active Biofilm Penetration and Control

One of the greatest challenges in potable water hygiene is biofilm formation. HydrasilAg+ actively penetrates and disrupts biofilms, improving overall system cleanliness and long term microbial control, an area where chlorine and ionization systems often struggle to provide consistent performance.

4. Greater Stability and Predictable Performance

Traditional disinfectant technologies face significant chemical limitations: Chlorine is highly reactive and degrades rapidly under heat, light, and fluctuating storage conditions.

Silver ions readily react with chlorides commonly present in seawater RO permeate, forming insoluble silver chloride and reducing antimicrobial effectiveness.

Copper ions lose efficacy as pH increases, forming soluble complexes above pH 7.2 and becoming largely ineffective above pH 8.8.

By comparison, HydrasilAg+ remains stable and effective across a broad pH range of approximately 2.9 – 10 and does not suffer from chloride complexing in the same way as conventional silver ion systems.

5. Reduced Corrosion and Staining Risk

Chlorine-based systems are known to contribute to corrosion within pipework and system components, while silver and copper/silver ion systems can lead to black/grey staining and deposits on tank surfaces, pools, and Jacuzzis.

HydrasilAg+ is significantly less aggressive on materials and does not produce staining, helping reduce maintenance requirements and extend system lifespan.

6. Environmentally Responsible Treatment

HydrasilAg+ decomposes into water and oxygen, leaving no harmful residual by -products behind. This makes it well suited to modern water management strategies focused on both operational performance and environmental responsibility.

7. Effective Across a Wider pH Range

Chlorine and copper-based systems are highly dependent on maintaining a relatively narrow pH window to remain effective.

HydrasilAg+ maintains reliable disinfectant performance across a significantly broader range of system conditions, providing greater flexibility and stability in real-world yacht applications.

8. Ideal for Continuous Dosing Strategies

Modern yacht water management is increasingly moving away from reactive disinfection towards proactive, continuous control.

HydrasilAg+ is particularly well suited to continuous dosing strategies, helping vessels maintain stable compliance and consistent water quality rather than responding only after problems arise.

9. Proven in Real-World Yacht Applications

The transition towards HydrasilAg+ is not theoretical. The product is already being successfully applied worldwide across complex potable water systems on yachts of all sizes, with increasing adoption throughout the industry.

Conclusion

Chlorine, silver, and copper/silver ion systems still have applications within certain environments. However, where consistency, long-term stability, reduced maintenance, and effective biofilm control are priorities, HydrasilAg+ is increasingly becoming the preferred solution.

For yachting professionals seeking to move beyond short-term corrective treatments towards sustainable water quality management, the advantages are becoming increasingly clear.
